So, What's a Story-Forward Photoshoot Like Anyway?

Updated: Jun 22

You’ve probably heard the term “storytelling photography” before, maybe even seen it in other social or web spaces. But here, you’ll notice I say something a little different: story-forward.

So… what does that actually mean?

Is it just another buzzword? Artsy code for “moody and mysterious”?

Nope. It’s much simpler, and a lot more meaningful, than that.

A story-forward photoshoot isn’t about acting, scripting, or trying to look like a movie still. It’s about letting the true shape of your life come through. The quiet glances. The held breath. The giggles that burst from little bellies. The in-between. It’s photography rooted in your real story, not just pretty pictures.

It’s not about pretending, it’s about presence.

In a story-forward session, we’re not manufacturing a moment. We’re noticing one.

You won’t be asked to stand stiffly or hold a perfect smile while I click the shutter. You might be asked to walk hand-in-hand, whisper something silly, scoop your kiddo up and spin them, or gently rest your forehead on your partner’s.

I guide you through gentle scenarios that help connection shine through, then I quietly step back and let the moment be yours.

It’s also not about chaos.

While these sessions do invite spontaneity and feeling, I don’t just show up and wing it. I always have a loose flow in mind based on what we talk about before the shoot. You’ll get a quick verbal walk-through at the start, and I’ll prompt you as we go in a way that feels natural. Not performative.

I shoot primarily outdoors in natural light, but in-home sessions are also a beautiful option. Either way, the goal stays the same: to honor what’s real about this chapter of your life.

It’s more than a photo, it’s a piece of your legacy.

The emotions captured during these sessions are often the ones you’ll miss most one day.

That early parenthood blur. The way your partner looked at you like you were the only two people in existence. The little fingers reaching for yours. These images preserve the feeling, not just the faces.

And sure, we can absolutely get a few looking-at-the-camera shots, too. I just aim for the moment to be natural over posed.

So who are these for?

Devoted moms who want to be in the photo for once. Soulful lovers who want to slow down and savor each other. Families who find beauty in the mess. Anyone who’s ever said, “I just want photos that feel like us.”

If that sounds like you? You’re in the right place.
